When you start to consider paying off your debt and living debt free, a lot of thoughts flood your mind. There’s a lot to think about! You’ve got to lower expenses and make more money. You’ve got to prioritize debt repayment. You’ve got to make a few sacrifices. You may have to change your life.
I mean, truly, the only way to change your life is to change your life.
And the only way to change your life is to COMMIT to changing your life.
Paying off debt has to be the thing that you do. For a while, and maybe a long while, it has to be your pet project. You have to give it attention.
You’ll have to track your expenses, look for ways to reduce spending, and find ways to earn more money. You’ll have to make big payments or extra payments or both.
But it won’t happen if you don’t commit.
Commitment is hard. It means declaring that this is the one thing. All other choices are off the table.
When you commit, you make a decision that you are dedicated to this project over anything else. You get serious.
It’s the only way to get it done.
To pay off debt, you’ve got to make the commitment to paying off debt. Then, arrange your life around that commitment the way you would a relationship or a job. Give it your full attention. Make debt payoff a do or die endeavor.
Burn the ships, as they say. When one general arrived on the land he wanted to conquer, he burned his ships so his soldiers would have no way to retreat. The only thing to do was win. They could no go back. They had to move forward.
They had to commit to the fight.
It’s the only way to persevere.
