On my way to visit friends recently, I passed a diner that advertised, “Blackberry Cobbler” on their sign. It stuck in my head for the remainder of my drive. When I arrived at my friend’s house, I asked her, “Do you have a good cobbler recipe?” She whipped her head around, and with a twinkle in her eye, said, “Girl, I’ve got the BEST cobble recipe.” Then, instead of handing me the recipe to copy, we ran to the car and drove to the store. We discussed our favorite fruit options for cobbler. We bought peaches.
Then we went back and made the best. damn. cobbler.
Later, while we sat on the porch, bellies full and breeze on our faces, we started talking about what we know now that we didn’t know in our twenties. When you’re almost 40, you become hyper aware of how little you know – and how even less you knew when you were younger. The lesson we landed on while blissed out on cobbler and summer breezes was this: We can do whatever the heck we want.
“You want cobbler?” my friend said. “Make effing cobbler.”
“You want to buy a house?” I said. “Buy an effing house.”
It went on like that for a while.
The lesson that sticks is this: you are the only one keeping you from having what you want. It’s a lot like “you can find a way.” As a matter of fact, it seemed even more poignant, then, that we made our own cobbler. We didn’t go out in search of places that served cobbler. We made our own. We made it with the conviction that it was the BEST option.
We could have gone out and found someone else’s cobbler. But making our own…well, it just tasted sweeter.
Are you hungry yet?
I mean that as both a question aimed at your reaction to reading the word “cobbler” so many times, and as a question aimed at someone who WANTS something.
What do you want?
You have to know before you can make it happen.
Once you know, though, that what you really want is cobbler, or pizza, or a debt-free life, or a home base…well, that’s when you MAKE IT HAPPEN.
You may not have the recipe handy. You might have to try from scratch. I promise you, though, that it’s worth it. It’s tastier, in the end, if it’s by your own design.
What do you want? Effing make it. No one is stopping you but you. You can do whatever you want.
